System: Process Furnace (EDC cracking furnace)
Scope: Instrumentation + Control System Design
This project covered the development of instrumentation data sheets and their material requisition. The soulution provides as well control system documentation development such as: control system philosophy, basic logic diagrams, start-up sequence and shut-down sequences. The solution provides safe start-up and shutdown sequences and stable operation designed in accordance with applicable industrial safety standards.
2) Process & control objective
The furnace had to:
- Maintain stable process conditions
- Protect the unit against unsafe conditions
- Interface with the plant control system (DCS), Emergency shut-down system (ESD) and burning management system (BMS).
3) Instrumentation scope
Key instruments and actuators designed, specified:
- Temperature, pressure, flow, level transmitters
- Gas analyzers
- Valves (Control, shut-off valves and pressure safety valves)
There were more than 100 instruments and valves and we also negotiated
prices with 3 suppliers. So in the end, the client had the high quality
devices with lower prices.

4) Control philosophy
The control philosophy was documented in a series of technical files, which included the following key documents:
- Control system philosophy
- Basic logic diagrams
- Start-up & shut-down sequence
Although AEPI has the capability to program PLCs and DCS systems, the objective was to develop the control philosophy in-house while outsourcing the programming tasks.
