Off-grid home

1) Project overview:

Industry: Residential / Sustainable Energy
System: Off-Grid Home (solar power, battery storage, backup generation, water and energy management)
Scope: Electrical System Design + Energy Storage Integration + Automation & Monitoring + Technical Documentation

This project covered the complete electrical, automation, and energy management scope for an off-grid residential home. The solution integrates solar photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage, backup power systems, and utility monitoring to ensure reliable and efficient operation independent of the public grid. The system provides automated energy management, load prioritization, remote monitoring capabilities, and safe operation of power generation and storage assets, designed in accordance with applicable electrical and safety standards.

2) Process & control objective

The off-grid energy system had to:

  • Maintain a stable and reliable power supply to residential loads
  • Optimize energy usage between solar generation, battery storage, and backup power sources
  • Monitor battery state-of-charge, power generation, and energy consumption
  • Pool heating control
  • Sauna control
  • Domestic hot water control
  • Fan-coil control
  • Underfloor heating control
  • Diesel generators integration
  • Water tank heater control
  • Interface with local control, remote monitoring, and energy management systems to provide operational visibility and system diagnostics

3) System architecture (P&ID)

  • Field instruments (temperature, level sensors)
  • Valves (shut-off valves, control valves)
  • Circulation pumps
  • PLC controller
  • Operator SCADA
P&ID of the system

4) Engineering documents produce

  • P&ID
  • Wiring schematic
  • Instrument datasheets
  • Instrument index
  • I/O list
  • Control philosophy

5) Commissioning and proof of work

6) On-site engineering

On-site activities included:

  • Maintenance of existing electrical cabinets and devices
  • Finding errors in existing installation
  • Upgrading the system
